Born July 24, 1970 in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx to David (a computer technician) and mother Guadalupe (a kindergarten teacher). Although both of her parents were born in Puerto Rico it wasn't until they had both emigrated to the States that they met. Jennifer is the middle of three daughters in the family with an older sister named Leslie and a younger sister, Lynda who is a New York DJ and morning news show correspondent with Channel 11 (also in NY).
At a very early age Jennifer showed a penchant for performing and was taking singing and dancing lessons by the age of 5. As she was growing up she attended Catholic school and went to an all-girl high school.
After high school she spent time working in a law office while continuing with dance classes at night. By the time she was 18 she left home to pursue her dream, much to her mother's chagrin. Within two years she landed her first breakthrough bit on the sketch comedy show In Living Color. Although The 'Fly Girls' on the show were never the main focus, she was at least being paid for what she loved to do.
More TV work followed including several failed series like Hotel Malibu and South Central before she landed her first big screen role. An uncredited performance in the dramatic film My Family garnered her some attention and, seven years after hitting L.A. found herself with a string of Hollywood credits. Jack with Robin Williams, Money Train with Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, Blood and Wine with Jack Nicholson but it would be Selena which would propel her to stardom.
Selena was based on the real life story of Mexican 'Tejano' style singer Selena and this film put Lopez front and centre, a make or break moment in a career if ever there was one. Obviously, there was no breaking to Lopez as she used Selena to launch herself into bigger movies, with Anaconda, Out of Sight, Oliver Stone's U-Turn before truly becoming a leading lady of the silver screen. Incidentally, by the time she performed in Out of Sight she had broken even more new ground by becoming the highest paid Latino actress in Hollywood...a bar she has kept raising higher and higher.
However much as film success has propelled her, her recording career has flourished as well. Her Debut album 'On The 6' went double-platinum. The song 'If You Had My Love', spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and the video for the tune earned four MTV Video Music Award nominations. She also landed a Grammy nomination for the song 'Waiting for Tonight,"' for Best Dance Recording.
In 2000 she came back to the big screen with The Cell and while not a box-office bonanza it more than doubled it's budget with $66 million in the U.S. alone. Her next film, The Wedding Planner co-starring Matthew McConaughey, repeated this success. Unfortunately her next movie, Angel, would not make it three for three as it quickly came and went at the theatres.
Then, in September of 2001 Lopez married her choreographer Cris Judd, 32, in a private ceremony in Calabasas, California. In 2002/03 she already has three more films slated for release. The thriller Enough, a comedy/romance film with Ralph Fiennes called The Chambermaid and finally sometime in 2003 a film deemed to be a comedy/drama/action/crime flick with Ben Affleck, Al Pacino and Christopher Walken called Gigli.
