Nia Long: Click Here For Nia's Filmography

Nia Long is one of those great talents, a woman who excels at both dramatic roles and easily slips into a comedic one without batting an eye.

Born October 30 1970 in Brooklyn, New York Nia is named for one of the holy days of Kwanza. The name Nia translates to 'life purpose' and is symbolized by lightning. Her parents divorced when she was only two and she went with her mother to Iowa City to live before heading into middle class South Central L.A. at the age of 7.

Once established there she began attending Catholic School and studying ballet, tap, jazz, gymnastics, guitar and acting. Her mother meanwhile was busy trying to keep the duo out of debt. Despite two master's degrees her mother found herself taking several low paying jobs during this time to make ends meet.

Nia wanted to help out and soon found that acting was one way she could contribute. In fact, a little trivia note for you here...her career was kick-started by Betty A. Bridges, mother of actor Todd Bridges (Different Strokes). For the next 15 years Betty would be Nia's acting coach.

Eventually she made it to the big screen, debuting in the John Singleton's directorial debut Boyz N The Hood. Not only would Boyz land Singleton two Oscar nods but it launched several acting careers...Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr. and, obviously, Nia Long's.

Some of Nia's follow-up projects were not as successful but helped her hone her abilities. While Ted Danson's Made In America pretty much died at the box-office, Nia also took a two year stint on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air opposite future mega-star Will Smith.

Her projects since then have been much more high profile. Comedy and drama ensemble pieces like Soul Food, The Best Man, and Friday, have all highlighted her abilities.

More recently she starred opposite Martin Lawrence in the hit comedy Big Momma's House (which I personally thought wasted her talents). She seems to be taking some time off after 1999/2000 where she appeared in 7 films altogether including Stigmata, Boiler Room and In Too Deep.
