Battle of the Planets

Directed By: David E. Hanson.
Starring: The voices of - Alan Young (as Keyop/7-Zark-7), Keye Luke (as Zoltar/The Great Spirit/Colonel Cronus), Ronnie Schell (as Jason), Janet Waldo (as Princess/Susan), Casey Kasem (as Mark) and Alan Dinehart (as Tiny Harper/Chief Anderson).

Basic Overview: Man, I watched this show faithfully in 1978 and it became my first introduction to a new style of animation far from the wanderings of Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse. Battle of the Planets concerns a A five member 'superhero' team called G-Force who fights to defend the Earth and its surrounding space colonies from the threat of Spectra.

This popular award-winning Japanimation series is often credited for starting the American anime revolution. Since the first episode aired stateside, the demand for Tatsunoko Productions to produce more programs featuring their innovative and stylish animation has never died down.

Each episode opened with the booming narration: "Battle of the Planets! G-Force, five incredible young people with superpowers! And watching over them from Centre Neptune, 7-Zark-7! Watching, warning against surprise attacks by alien galaxies from beyond space. G-Force! Fearless young orphans, protecting Earth's entire galaxy. Always five, acting as one. Dedicated! Inseparable! Invincible!"

Battle of the Planets Battle of the Planets - Vol.1: (also includes One Bonus G-Force Episode: The Robot Stegosaur)

Attack of the Space Terrapin

Center Neptune, a world defense base, lies off the West Coast, 900 fathoms beneath the surface of the ocean. There, the precious Vitaluman is mined, an amazing ore that renews the depleted soil of Earth and the other planets, and without which, all life would cease to exist. Guarding the base against attack is the invincible, transmutable G-Force: Keyop, Jason, Princess, Tiny, Mark and 7-Zark-7 - their robotic protector. When Zark's scanners pick up a radio-controlled attack monster from Spectra heading for one of the Vitaluman vaults, he's baffled. Why would anyone want to steal something that is given away free? The answer, of course, is Zoltar, who wants to control it, and thereby, the universe. And so begins the cataclysmic Battle of the Planets, with the entire galaxy hanging in the balance.

Rescue of the Astronauts

Two astronauts find startling evidence of giant alien bases, underwater on Mars. Returning from their top-secret mission, they mysteriously disappear on re-entry. 7-Zark-7 calls in the G-Force. Their assignment: rescue the astronauts and get the taped evidence. Only problem, the astronauts have been hijacked by the aliens who don't want anyone to know about their bases, and Zoltar is their leader! G-Force locates their huge underwater headquarters and Mark transmutes into a diver to gain access. Zoltar's aliens attack with drill-like precision, finally ordering Mark to surrender or never see the astronauts again. Now the G-Force Fiery Phoenix is the only thing that stands between Mark and oblivion.

Battle of the Planets - Vol.2: (Bonus Episode: The Blast From the Bottom of the Sea)

The Space Mummy

7-Zark-7 discovers a new planet, much like Earth, hiding behind Venus and it is named Zarkadia after himself. Lately, mysterious plane crashes have been occurring there and g-Force is sent to investigate. But when Mark reaches the crash site, he's attacked by a colossal space mummy powered by Plutonium X. A new synthetic mineral, Anti-Pluton, is the only defense against it. Mark meets a young boy, Buddy, a missing pilot's son, whose uncle is the inventor of Anti-Pluton, and he agrees to help. But Zoltar himself, disguised as the boy's father, returns to wreak havoc and launch an all out assault on Zarkadia with help from the invincible space mummy.

The Space Serpent

Something is out there and it's approaching Earth: something massive enough to affect the movement of the stars it passes. Could it be another Spectra attack? It is, and this time Zoltar has outdone himself. He's commissioned a huge space serpent with an insatiable appetite for crude oil. It attacks Earth's oil refineries from underground, causing major earthquakes and upheavals. Mark's old friend, a famous seismologist, is lost in a quake and the doctor's daughter, Debbie, blames Mark. Now Mark takes it on himself to avenge his friend's death, but the battle won't be easy: blow the serpent apart and it quickly reassembles. Has Zoltar finally won? Will G-Force have to use their ultimate secret weapon?
