Jay and Silent Bob Strike Review

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the multi-plex.

Kevin Smith is a man I admire. Not only does he write and direct his movies, he makes them an experience for the movie-goer. He wants the fans to experience the joy he seems to get from making movies. Sometime it works out like with Chasing Amy and sometimes we get Mallrats. Some have been box-office hits (Clerks, Chasing Amy) and some have been Mallrats. Either way, thanks to DVD we have learned more about the film process, the in-fighting and the comradery because of Smith, and his films have gained a notoriety on DVD as 'event releases' despite his once shouting out 'DVD sucks'. Note: He now claims he would never had said such a thing, which makes him a truly wonderful hypocrite.

So when it comes to Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, the fan base is assured and the disc will probably be a dual set. It will be a set I will buy unseen because he has yet to steer me wrong when it comes to utilizing what DVD is all about. But is the movie worthy of buying, that is the question in this review.

The short and long of it, Jay And Silent Bob is a love letter of sorts to the fans, rife with in-jokes from those who have been there over the years with Smith. It is a movie for a niche audience and a 100 million box-office seems highly unlikely in North America. Perhaps $40 to $50...but $100?...in a perfect world only I am afraid.

I am a Smith fan, and recognize this as one of his weaker outings. It's not Dogma, It's not Chasing Amy or even Clerks, but it is better than Mallrats and the sheer fun of the film had me going to see it twice. I could bash the middle of the film for having a slightly lagging pace (which Smith took P.T. Anderson to task for Magnolia...mind you Magnolia was three hours too long) and some performances that seemed as faltering as some in Clerks. But that is nit-picking. No one goes to a Smith film to see Hamlet...we want Dante, and Randall, and Na-ga-nooch...we want Jay and Silent Tubby Bob!

And Smith, as he loves to do, gives us what we deserve. A totally respectable 3 out of 5...but when it comes out on DVD you know that rating will be upped to a 5.
