Sorority Boys Sorority Boys Review

Directed By: Wally Waladorski.
Starring: Barry Watson, Harland Williams, Michael Rosenbaum, Melissa Sagemiller, Heather Matarazzo.

Synopsis: Dave (Barry Watson), Adam (Michael Rosenbaum) and Doofer (Harland Williams) are about to go where no frat boy has gone before. They're three playboy chauvinists who, strapped for cash, find themselves drawn to one last, desperate hope for free housing: one of their campus' sororities, Delta Omicron Gamma (or D.O.G.). With a little make-up, a little pantyhose and lots of "pluck," they go undercover as Daisy, Adina and Roberta. Everything goes fine until Dave falls for Leah (Melissa Sagemiller), the alpha D.O.G. The boys see firsthand how the other half lives and their history of treating women badly comes back to haunt them when they walk a mile in their shoes.

Every Dog has its day...

Animal House has been the yardstick by which every campus comedy has been measured since it's debut almost 25 years ago. And no one has ever come close to matching it...perhaps because it was wisely placed in the bygone era of the 50's wheras all these other rip-offs take place in the present day. Now, I realize that some might get upset by my generalizing this film as an Animal House rip-off...but riddle me this film review reader...why would it have cameos by John Vernon (Dean Vernon) and Mark Metcalf (Nedermeyer) unless it was some sort of tip of the hat to these men?

Still, as far as a mindless romp, Sorority Boys is not the worst of the lot, in fact, there are several laugh out loud moments...especially one where a Frat boy gets tossed out one window and boomerangs back in through another.

Still, the basic idea that men dressing as women as a comedy premise has been around since the advent of film (early Chaplin, etc.) and according to the American Film Institute, the top two comedies of all time are cross dressing ones (Some Like It Hot and Tootsie). To this I say.....whhhhhat? Personally I think it's a limited gag that tires very quickly...but the audience I saw it with, surprisingly made up mostly of women, were howling at these gags! So, again, what do I know?

This film is a mish-mash of comedy...a little something for everyone, just not a the same time...for the adolescent boys there is a dildo/martial arts fight within the sorority between two of the leads and for women, a lot of 'stand up and fight for your right jokes' that are for the most part, quite funny.

All in all, the misogynistic opening of the film has a point...but man, if it had kept up going doing that path I would have hated this film. The characters are generally quite unlikeable at first...but even Harland Williams begins to grow on you like some feminine fungi. As for Michael Rosenbaum, man does he ever recall Tim Matheson from Animal House...similar odd shaped head look.

This is really a first time film for director Wallace Wolodarsky who was once a supervising producer for The Simpsons...perhaps this will account for the 'everything and the kitchen sink' approach to comedy...it works better on The Simpsons though. Still, it has nudity for the guys, it has an erect penis joke for the ladies and it has a confused lesbian scene for everyone...awwwwww. So sweet.

I wouldn't rush out to watch this again but if I had to sit down and zone out to it for two hours on a Sunday afternoon sometime, I guess I could handle that.
