Spider-man Review

Directed By: Sam Raimi
Starring: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe, James Franco, J. K. Simmons, Ted Raimi, Cliff Robertson.

Synopsis: For more on this title (or available Spidey animated titles) check out our Spider-Man Page in the Comic Book Section. Based on the legendary flagship character of Marvel comics, this is the story of Peter Parker, a high school student living with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben after the death of his parents when he was just a baby. He's an avid student with a much-less-than-stellar social life and a knack for bad luck. While attending a scientific demonstration, a freak accident bombards a stray spider with radiation, and that same spider finds its way onto the unsuspecting Peter's body and bites him, miraculously granting him incredible spider-like abilities; in effect, making him into the amazing Spider-Man. Peter will find that there's a thin line between an ordinary man and an extraordinary hero; and he'll have to be the one to cross it.

Okay, the above bit is from the studio press stuff...but let's put it in perspective of the fans...those of you who have grown up on Spidey cartoons (including Spidey, Firestar and Ice Man), who had a lunch box with Spider-man on it, who who read Amazing Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, Marvel Team-Ups, etc...this movie is made for you. It is a must see, a must love and doubtlessly, a must see again.

I have not been this giddy leaving a movie theatre in a long time, and there are so many things to praise in this flick it is hard to pick one to start with.

However, I am starting with what may seem the most un likeliest of locales, that of the performance of J.K. Simmons who plays J. Jonah Jameson...ohmigod...bang on, the man should get a best supporting actor nomination for his portrayal...hysterical and leaving you wanting more.

Tobey Maguire. Oh, Tobey Maguire. I have a friend who will remain nameless (Bobby) who thinks Tobey is going to ruin the movie. Bobby...I mean, Mr. Nameless needs a slap. Tobey is Peter Parker...by casting the right Peter Parker, the Spider-man part follows naturally.

Oh, so much enjoyment from this film. Dare I say it? I dare! The best...bar none...BEST superhero film ever made. If forced to find anything I disliked about the movie...and that means asked...well, it would be the godawful rendition of the Spiderman theme song by Aerosmith. What the hell happened there boys?

I have already read a few critical slams of Willem Dafoe saying he is not as charming as some other villains like Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor or Jack Nicholson as The Joker...well, duh...He's the freaking Green Goblin, a totally different character and one that Dafoe's eerie rubber face brings a plethora of creepiness too. So, screw you movie critics...

Kirsten Dunst. Well, the lady was already a pretty well established name before the movie came out...this is going to put her into the stratosphere.

As for the director, Evil Dead's Sam Raimi has more than been a fan, he's made a movie that will make him a favourite amongst Spidey fans. Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for a couple of Sam's trademarks including Bruce Campbell and brother Ted Raimi's cameos along with the standard a yellow 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 that appears in almost every single one of his movies.

You know what? I can pontificate on how much I enjoyed the slight deviations from the original spider-man origin story (dumping the radio-active spiders for genetic mutants..and something else with the webbing which I won't give away...all nice touches) or the great elements of humour throughout, or even subtle references like Peter Parker being fired by Doctor Connor (who later becomes the Lizard)...but it is pointless. This is, as far as I can see, the movie of the summer. Yes, yes, I know Attack of the Clones is in two weeks, and yes, I will be in line to see it...but this was a childhood pleasure brought to full breathing life and those cinematic achievements are so rare...too rare...and I can not wait until the second outing of Maguire, Raimi and Dunst (and more J.K. Simmons!).

Again, back to Maguire...he brings so much to his role...he makes Peter Parker the guy you feel sorry for and rally around when he takes those steps towards the awesome responsibilities. Sure, you can have your Bruce Wayne (rich kid with dead parent grief)...or your Superman (freak from space)...but Peter Parker, you can relate to the guy. Those few times that Spider-man/Parker gets to show up all those who have kept him down in different ways makes you want to applaud...to beat the bully's ass and send him off packing, his head reeling from the walloping he takes!

Until the next Spidey movie, Make Mine Marvel! I'm giving this film a rare five stars and adding it to my must own DVD list, hopefully a major Special Edition with at least two discs!
