One time reigning queen of the indie circuit it has taken these last few years for Hollywood to catch up with the woman that has been tough, cool, quirky and fascinating for years...and even then it has taken some persuading with some unique film choices.
"I guess people who know me, or who represent me, would see me as someone who's resisting fame and fortune. It's not that I resist so much. It's just that the parts I think I have a shot at getting turn up more in independent movies."
Thank God for that, all we need is Catherine Keener to go saccharine sweet on us and start ditching the unique roles she has taken on. Her choices of roles have been both good and bad...the horrible 8MM is an example of a miscalculation while Being John Malkovich (arguably indie-rooted) was a phenominal step forward for anyone.
Keener is the middle of five children and was born in Miami, Florida in 1961. She was raised in Hialeah, where she attended Monsignor Edward Pace High School. After high school, Keener moved away to Norton, Mass. to attend Wheaton College, an all-girl liberal arts school, where she majored in English and history. It was in her final year that, when unable to take a photography course, she found herself in a theater class and was cast in a productiono of Uncommon Women and Others.
One could say, the rest is history...a history of small roles, one line bits and even getting fired from the Pat Morita cop show after ten episodes. Keener laughingly admits she didn't really know what was going on at the time.
"I was terrible, I was so bad! Thank God those shows are not on the air anymore. On O'Hara, I played a little cop sidekick named Cricket. I didn't know what I was doing. I did 10 episodes, and then they recast. I got fired, essentially."
However, Keener did get the hang of things and soon began cropping up in larger roles with critcally acclaimed movies like Box Of Moonlight and Living In Oblivion. In fact, her early start was as strong as it is partly thanks to director Tom DiCillo who directed both of those films along with Johnny Suede and The Real Blonde, also starring Keener.
She snagged an Independant Spirit award for her role in Walking and Talking and followed that up with bigger roles in Simpatico and finally Being John Malkovich directed by Spike Jonze for which she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
"When I met Keener, I was trying to find someone who could totally control the situation while being totally cool and casual. There's something so casual - but still all-knowing - about her. It would be very easy to play Maxine in a very curt way. But she does it in a way that you somehow like." - Spike Jonze
More recently she will be seen on screen in the dark comedy Death To Smoochy with Robin Williams and Ed Norton. As for quirky roles, she has landed the quirkiest yet, playing herself in Being John Malkovich that is being recreated within Spike Jonze's newest movie Adaptation.
