Born Aria Argento on September 20, 1975 in Rome Italy...it seemed as if there were little choice for Asia to enter into the film industry, what with her mother being actress Daria Nicolodi and her father the famed Italian master of horror Dario Argento. The name Asia is what her parents selected for her however, for some reason, the registration would not accept Asia and it seemed easier to call her Aria on paper and Asia in person.
Asia made her screen debut at the age of nine in the mini-series Sogni e bisogni (roughly translated into Dreams and Needs) directed by Sergio Citi. Sure, one can make the argument that she would not have had such an early start if it were not for her family background, but the argument would have to be with someone else as I would agree with you.
In fact, even Asia has remarked, "Sometimes I think my father gave me life because he needed a lead actress for his films."
As Asia got older she began to show some real talent, not only on screen as an actress, but as a writer of short stories, and more recently, a director. She directed a documentary on her father and another one on director Abel Ferrara (who was her director in New Rose Hotel with Christopher Walken and Willem Dafoe). She has also gone into the realm of triple-threat as writer/director and actor with her film Scarlet Diva.
In 1994 she picked up a David di Donatello Award as best actress for her role in Perdiamoci di vista and picked up another in 1996 for best actress in Compagna di viaggio. As her fame grew she became known as "the face of the new generation." In Italy and most of Europe seemed to have a clue as to who this lady is.
But North America, save for the die-hard true horror film buffs, have no idea who this lady is...well, until now. What with XXX (Triple X) with Vin Diesel set to be a huge blockbuster it is unlikely she will not be gaining some new fans. It should be interesting to see what the fan reaction is and how, if at all, Hollywood will bring more of Asia to the big screen...or if she will prefer to stick to the Europe and Independent Cinema realm.
