The story goes that Claire Danes originally went out to L.A. as she was being considered for a role in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List. At the same time she was 'discovered' and cast as Angela Chase in the teen drama My So-Called Life. She eventually turned down the role in Schindler's when it was offered to her as she wouldn't be able to attend school while filming in Poland.

That didn't seem to affect her career too much as My So-Called Life would go on to draw the attention of critics and a pretty devoted fan base.

Born Claire Catherine Danes on April 12, 1979 in New York, New York and would begin acting at a very early age. The Arts run through the family as her mother is a painter and her father is a photographer. At the age of nine Claire had enrolled in an acting class at the Lee Strasberg Studio. By the time she was in Grade six she was attending the Professional Performing Arts School. She was already hitting the audition circuit and handed landed a role in an episode of Law and Order and a film called Dreams Of Love directed by Milos Forman.

Although My So-Called Life was cancelled after a short 2 season run Danes had already made her mark as a young actress who could bring a surprising maturity and insight rarely seen in child actors. She was soon being cast in feature films, playing Beth in Little Women and holding her own opposite such other performers as Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, and Gabriel Byrne (who would later play her father in Polish Wedding). A lot of comparisons were being made of Danes and Jodie Foster as child actors so it was only fitting she would be cast in Home for the Holidays directed by Foster.

Still, none of her films were lighting the box-office on fire until 1996's Romeo + Juliet where she played the lead role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Danes was now in demand and landed some work with some pretty prestigious directors. She appeared as Joaquin Phoenix's white trash girlfriend in U-Turn directed by Oliver Stone and played an abused wife saved by Matt Damon in Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of John Grisham's novel The Rainmaker.

Neither performed huge at the box office but that was nothing compared to the critical bashing The Mod Squad would take. This would not be the worst thing to happen though as Danes went on to spark some controversy when she made some off-hand remarks about the Philippines during the filming of Brokedown Palace. She has subsequently been banned from the country as a result.

In 1998 she enrolled at Yale University (effectively answering the question of her rare appearances in films these last few years. She is now poised to return to film in a large way. In 2002 alone she has Igby Goes Down, a slick looking little indie flick starring Kieran Culkin, Susan Sarandon and Ryan Phillippe.

In 2003 she has the film It's All About Love which reunites her with her U-Turn co-star Joaquin Phoenix and finally she has what is bound to be one of the biggest flicks of Summer 2003 - Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines.
