Brittany Murphy, unconventional, quirky, but talented and can switch from comedy to drama without blinking an eye. If you haven't heard of this actress you've missed out, but don't worry, you will have plenty of time to catch up. She has a full slate over the next two years and we are sure to be seeing more of her.
Born in Atlanta on November 10, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia, Brittany Murphy was raised by her mother, Sharon, in Edison, New Jersey. Growing up she showed an early flair for the realm of acting, putting on shows for her family. By the time she was nine she had already stepped into the limelights, hitting the regional theatre productions and perfecting her craft. From there she found herself auditioning (and getting) a lot of commercial commercials.
In 1990, at the age of 13 she landed her first major television role, a part on the sitcom Blossom. The next year she landed a lead in Drexell's Class. This did not pan out for her though, as the series was quickly cancelled.
In '92 she made her film debut in the dysfunctional family drama, Family Prayers. Murphy displayed a raw talent for playing dysfunctional, border line characters, something that she has been called upon to repeat in various ways over the years. Clueless, Freeway and more recently Girl, Interrupted have all been oddly displaced characters that she has been able to find the heart of and bring to life on the screen.
Clueless, though a break out film for Alicia Silverstone, left Brittany playing the less glamorous role of Tai Fraser. Following Clueless a lot more work fell her way. Though the fame and fortune side of Hollywood seems not to be her objective. Over the last few years she has opted for more diverse work, such as the Holocaust drama The Devil's Arithmetic (TV Movie).
If none of these films seem to be drawing you nearer to Miss Murphy, then perhaps you saw her as the ever cheerful beauty pageant contestant in Drop Dead Gorgeous or you may have heard her voice in the animated series King of the Hill (she does the voice of Luanne).
Within the last couple of years Murphy has seen her star rising steadily with roles in Ed Burn's offering, Sidewalks of New York while also appearing in Penny Marshall's return to the big screen alongside Drew Barrymore in Riding In Cars With Boys.
For those lovers of the truly trivial...The DVD of Don't Say A Word features a screen test of Miss Murphy.
