Separating the myth from reality can be difficult and in Charlize Theron's case the reality is much more intriguing.
Take for example her parents. Her mother is German, her father was French. When she was 15 her father attacked her mother. In self-defence her mother shot her father to death and was never charged with the incident.
Or take the story of how she was discovered. Apparently she was on Hollywood Boulevard arguing with her bank manager after a refusal to cash her check. An agent happened to be nearby and handed her his card. Within eight month's the agent had helped land Theron her first acting gig. Eight months, doesn't sound that long but think of all the auditions one can go to in that time.
Charlize was born August 7, 1975 and raised on a farm in Benoni, South Africa. Initially she grew up training to be a ballet dancer. After the death of her father her mother urged her to consider a career in modeling. So, at the age of sixteen Charlize found herself in Milan posing for the cameras. However she soon became tired of the modeling scene and returned to dancing.
| This led her to New York City where she began dancing with the Joffrey Ballet until a knee injury prevented this from continuing. With modeling a bore and dancing pretty much out now, her mother suggested hitting L.A. to see what might happen there as an actress. Insert the previous bank story and you have Charlize finally landing her calling it seems. |

As she hit the auditions and picked up roles here and there in television and film she began taking acting lessons. The work paid off as landed a bit part in Children of the Corn (Part 3) but really broke the mold with the release of the film Two Days In The Valley. This turned out to be just one of those lucky breaks. Originally the role of Helga Svelgen was to got to Daphne Deckers. But Daphne had a conflict of work (possibly the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and the part went to Charlize Theron.
While the movie never performed all that well it soon gained a notoriety for the catfight between Theron and Teri Hatcher. The following year she appeared opposite Keanu Reeves in The Devil's Advocate. I still can't figure out why the film received so many awful reviews as I actually quite liked it - hmmmmm tangent.

Since then she has appeared in a mish mash of films with a pretty wild degree of success. Films like Trial and Error and The Astronaut's Wife came and went while others like The Cider House Rules performed quite well. As always though, despite the box-office take on some of her films, more work came her way. She has since found herself cast opposite such names as Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, Woody Allen and more recently Ed Norton and Mark Wahlberg in the re-make of The Italian Job. |
Recently she has signed on to play the role of Britt Ekland in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers What with Britt being married to Peter for only four years, Theron will only be on set for 10 days. In terms of bigger, more high profile roles she has recently completed shooting on a rather nasty little flick called Monster where she portrays Aileen Wuornos, the first female serial killer. Also in the works is a film called Head in the Clouds with Penelope Cruz and Stuart Townsend.
