Born Julia O'Hara Stiles on March 21, 1981, she would grow up to be one of the premiere young actressess and noted as 21 Hottest Stars Under 21 by Teen People Magazine.
The reason for the hoopla? A surprisingly smart, witty and well-acted teen comedy called 10 Things I Hate About You. The film, made for $8 million went on to gross almost $40 which in this day and age of $100 million blockbusters sounds like a flop but there is a rule in Hollywood. If the film pulls in 3 times the original budget, it's a hit...well, five times is a smash and the two leads (Julia and Heath Ledger) found themselves on display and being wooed everywhere.
Getting to this point was not a fluke. Julia had been wanting to act at a very early age and took some real initiative to make it happen.
In 1992, at the age of 11 she wrote a letter to a Manhattan theater director asking to be cast in a production. The result was that she was soon acting onstage in avant-garde plays at both the La Mama and Kitchen Theaters. By 1993 she made her first appearance before the cameras...doing such things as an Apple Jacks commercial.
It was 1996 she made her feature film debut in I Love You, I Love You Not which starred Claire Danes and James Van Der Beek. Bigger roles soon came here way with an appearance as Harrison Ford's daughter in The Devil's Own and a pretty big leap with Wicked, a very ...demented plot line not meant for the kids. With Wicked she had graduated to leading roles though and it was the following year she leapt to attention in 10 Things I Hate About You playing Kat Stratford in this modern re-telling of Shakespeare's Taming Of The Shrew.
In a move that is admirable...while shooting films she also began attending Columbia University in 2000 where she has been majoring in English. Believe me, the world could use a few more actors who study English. Hopefully she has been excelling in the field, for this is a lady who, at the age of 20, has already appeared in three Shakespeare based movies. O was based on Othello, Hamlet was based on Much Ado About Nothing and 10 Things I Hate About You as mentioned earlier is based on Taming of the Shrew.
In 2001 she broke some real ground as a leading lady with the release of Save The Last Dance. Made for a paltry $13 million the film pulled in $27 on opening weekend and was just shy of a $100 million, almost 8 times the original budget. Hollywood was loving Julia Stiles.
Stiles though isn't content to be just another actress. You know how some of them say they are concerned about issues in interviews, well, Stiles puts her money where her mouth is. She follows a vegan diet and in 2001 she signed up with Habitat for Humanity International, an organization that builds homes for the needy.
In 2003 she has three new films coming out covering a wide variety of topics and co-stars including Julia Roberts in Mona Lisa Smile.
