Kate Hudson: Click Here For Kate's Filmography

Admit it...you didn't know Kate Hudson as anything other than the daughter of Goldie Hawn who had done some films you may or may not have seen…that is, until Almost Famous made her not only a name but an Oscar nominee as well.

Sure, you can argue it. You saw in 200 Cigarettes in theatres before Almost Famous even started filming. I know I did. But I don't remember leaving the movie thinking Kate Hudson stood out any more than the rest of the ensemble cast that included Ben Affleck, Jay Mohr, Casey Affleck, Martha Plimpton and Christina Ricci. I thought the entire cast did as good as job as they could with the script.

Perhaps you even saw Ricochet River before it was repackaged with her front and center on the box of the film, but did you have any idea that this lady was going to be hitting the theatres with three major flicks with big money and names in 2003? Or that she would turn down the role of Mary Jane Watson in Spider-man (which went to Kirsten Dunst instead) complaining it was too much screaming and not enough acting. (The role she went with instead was that of Ethne Eustace in the Four Feathers).

Ok...that's not fair, how can you know something like that in advance. And she does have a point about the whole Spider-man thing.

She was born Kate Gerry Hudson on April 19, 1979 in Los Angeles, California. Hudson grew up with her famous mom and not only lucked out by having some striking similarities in looks (especially in the eye and smile) but with talent as well. Her father is musician Bill Hudson, though as Kate has expressed many a time, she grew up with Kurt Russell as her father and has never been close with Bill.

Although she has never cashed in on her name to get a break in the industry, I'm also pretty sure it never proved to be a hindrance. Although the family had hoped Kate might head to New York University after her high school graduation, Kate decided to try her luck in the professional acting realm first. That makes it sound as if Kate has no professional training and just decided to walk into films which could not be further from the truth. Her high school was the performing arts school in Santa Monica called Crossroads.

Soon she found herself making her feature film debut in a movie called Desert Blue where she played a starlet with big goals despite being stuck in a small California Town. Desert Blue never made it beyond a limited release (5 screens if the the truth be told) while her next two films Gossip and 200 Cigarettes made the rounds nationwide, they were also pretty much destroyed by the critics of the time.

When Almost Famous was being cast Kate was ecstatic to be part of the film, though the role she had was not the one she played in the film. At the time the role of Penny Lane was to be played by actress Sarah Polley. Kate was going to play the stewardess sister now played by Zooey Deschanel. When Polley dropped out of the film Hudson begged director Cameron Crowe for a chance to read the role. I suppose that worked out pretty well, Oscar nomination and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. If you call nominations, awards, a jump in stature, money and roles being offered a form of success...which I do, but I'm shallow that way.

Recently Kate had The Four Feathers with Heath Ledger and Wes Bentley which did not perform so well at the box-office...however, with three more films ready to hit the big screen in 2003 this shouldn't faze her much.

The first, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days went and did the unthinkable...pulled in over $100 million in the winter months when such films usually perform poorly. Then there is the Rob Reiner comedy Alex and Emma based on a Dostoevsky short story. This will be followed by the film Le Divorce based on Diane Johnson's popular novel of the same name.

Of course, while these are already finished and in the can she is busy with post-production work on Raising Helen, a dramatic comedy directed by Garry Marshall starring John Cusack, John Corbett and Helen Mirren. In this film Kate will be playing Helen Bradley a woman whose sister and brother-in-law are killed in a car crash. Helen soon finds herself busy raising her sister's three children.
