Think Chris Klein is a flash in the pan? A lucky high school kid who got a break for being in the right place and the right time and then cast in Election? Maybe so. However, that doesn't change the fact that in the last three years he has now churned out eight films all told, two of which are slated for release this year.
Born March 14, 1979 to Fred and Terese Klein in Hinsdale, Illinois. All five Kleins (he has a sister named Debbie and a brother named Tim) moved to Omaha, Nebraska, when Chris was thirteen. From there it was just life as usual.
Despite the discovery tale, (director Alexander Payne was scouting locations for Election, spotted Klein coming out of the weight room and the rest is history), Klein was interested in acting at a very young age. He had starred in school plays and made some amateur short films with his friends. But there was also a little more to that discovery story that the media usually drops so as to keep it neat and clean. The fact remains that Klein had already graduated high school and gone on to University to begin his first year when Payne actually apporached him about the role.
But what really gets Hollywood stoked on this guy when it comes down to it is, he's the All-American Kid. A linebacker for the football team, state finalist in the freestyle 400-meter relay, and who also played the lead in West Side Story all in high school.
The truly amamzing thing, aside from Klein's being found at random, is the string of movies he has churned out so quickly. He was stunningly funny in the very under seen film Election but became familiar to people everywhere as Oz in American Pie. This was what really got the ball rolling. Klein soon found himself shooting Here On Earth with Leelee Sobieski followed quickly by Say It Isn't So and then into the very physical if disappointing re-make of Rollerball.
Klein took a bit of a slap for Rollerball but as most critics were quick to point out that the stars were not at fault, just the idea of the re-making of a classic was a weak one. Looking to broaden his work he signed on to do the Vietnam film, We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson, Madeleine Stowe, Greg Kinnear and Keri Russell playing his wife. He has also signed on to for The United States of Leland to appear opposite such hot-shots as Kevin Spacey, Don Cheadle, Jena Malone and Sherilyn Fenn. Not bad for a kid who just wanted a workout.
