You want to know how to get into the movies? Well, having a talent for acting helps...so does being a good looking model or commercial talent who spent years on the circuits putting in your dues...or you can luck out, and be the son and daughter of Naomi Foner and Stephen Gyllenhaal.
Admittedly that sounds trite but if your parents and a producer/writer (Naomi Foner) and writer/director (Stephen Gyllenhaal) one has to admit you have a few inroads that others might not have.
However, to be fair, Jake has been acting since childhood before making his screen debut when he was in fifth grade in Billy Crystal's City Slickers (he played the son of Crystal).
His follow up film was one directed by his father, the critically praised but widely snubbed A Dangerous Woman (starring Debra Winger). However as time has passed and Jake has appeared in more films, something has emerged, a very quiet and thoughtful talent that has only one other actor in the same vein, Tobey Maguire. Although, born December 19, 1980 makes him five years younger than Maguire, so who knows what we can find happening by the time Gyllenhaal breaks out. Another Gyllenhaal to keep an eye on is Maggie who also has a role in Donnie Darko as well as Riding In Cars With Boys and 40 Days and 40 Nights.
A few films for the uninitiated to check out...October Sky where Gyllenhaal really shines as he plays real life rocket builder Homer Hickam and the surprisingly funny Bubble Boy, a film which seemed to be a one joke flick but actually grew on me as it went on.
After October Sky Gyllenhaal has had a pretty full slate pulling in classes at Columbia University, playing in a rock band and starring in Donnie Darko and Bubble Boy. Perhaps they weren't the biggest flicks (although Donnie Darko has become a cult fave and already appearing with a revamped director's cut) he appeared in opposite such stars as Jennifer Aniston in The Good Girl and Moonlight Mile featuring Dustin Hoffman and Holly Hunter. While Gyllenhaal has yet to find that big breakthrough role it is only a matter of when, not if.
More recently you can find Gyllenhaal making news in some A-List circles. For one he has been romantically linked with Kirsten Dunst and for another, when Tobey Maguire was almost forced out on Spider-Man 2 due to a bad back it was Gyllenhaal that the producers looked towards as his replacement. Don't feel bad for Jake missing out on the big-budget web-slinging flick (well, maybe a little bad for him) as he now has a fair sized budget on a huge disaster flick by the people who brought you Independence Day. It's called The Day After Tomorrow.
After that you will be able to catch Jake in no less than four feature films, Proof, Me and my Monster, Nautica and Brokeback Mountain to bring us into 2005.
