Kelly Hu followed what is becoming a more traditional path for female actors, that of being a model first then a steady T.V. and film career. Why not? For some it works...look at Cameron Diaz. |
Kelly Hu, born February 13, 1968 in Honolulu, Hawaii began taking her first modeling jobs while attending Kameameha High School. This led to her spending four months in Japan on different assignments before returning home and taking a novel step in building her career. She entered a local beauty pageant and soon found herself Miss Teen U.S.A. in 1985 (making her the first Asian-American to hold the title).
| However, according to pageant regulations, winners are prevented from taking on modeling jobs, so the steps that was supposed to help with her career seemed to put in on hold for awhile. |

However, this was a short-term thing and by 1987, after having moved to L.A. she landed some commercial work before getting her first breakthrough role as Melia, Mike's girlfriend (Kirk Cameron) on Growing Pains. Since then television has been pretty good to her with Night Court, Tour of Duty and 21 Jump Street before bigger roles on series began to emerge like The Bold and The Beautiful.
In 1993 Hu left 'the biz' for a short while as she represented Hawaii in the Miss U.S.A. Pageant before returning. Just prior to this hiatus she had begun to land some roles in feature films like Friday the 13th, Part 8 and as Ray Manzarek's wife (played by Kyle MacLachlan) in Oliver Stone's The Doors.
Then she landed a sizeable role on the TV show Nash Bridges where she stayed for two years, which was followed up with the cop-action show Martial Law with Sammo Hung. Hu fit right into the set and was able to use her brown belt in Karate skills to her advantage for the show before it was cancelled.
However all of these were mere stepping stones to the success she is about to embark upon now. With the release of The Scorpion King Kelly Hu will be someone new hordes of fans will begin looking up like crazy all over the internet and it seems with her follow up gangster film Cradle 2 the Grave with Jet Li and DMX she will be more than well established.
