Born in 1972 in San Francisco, California.
I don’t know what to think of some of the info I was able to dig up on Leslie Mann. Apparently she credits a lot of her acting success to her three therapists (three?), a psychic (uh-huh) and Susan Jeffer’s popular self help book ‘Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway’.
Either Leslie has a helluva sense of humour…or she has some serious acting issues. Either way, she seems to be doing alright by it.
She made her film debut back in 1991 with Virgin High and did a lot of T.V. work like 1994’s Birdland before really nailing a coup. She beat out 500 other aspiring actresses for a role in The Cable Guy as Matthew Broderick’s girlfriend. This was the big time…Jim Carrey was on a huge hot streak, and Ben Stiller was directing. Unfortunately, the movie failed to really catch on (though it still performed quite well at the box-office).
But in Hollywood, it doesn’t always matter whether or not the film performed, but was the person memorable. Apparently so as Leslie was soon cast in She’s The One and then opposite Bruce Willis in the period action piece Last Man Standing. While neither of these films broke out big, Leslie was getting known and audiences were beginning to recognize her.
Oddly, real success would come in a film that almost seems like a nonsensical summer throw away. George of the Jungle based on the old Jay Ward cartoon surprised a lot of people…not only was it a hit; it was sharp, witty, goofy and just one fun little summer flick.
Another comedy followed that also performed quite well, but one could credit Adam Sandler for bringing the bucks in on Big Daddy. It seemed as Leslie was being groomed for a solid comedic career…and then came director Mike Figgis’ Timecode in 2000. More of an experimental play on digital video than a true film (though I am sure Figgis fans would tear me apart for that one).
More recently Leslie has made a return to the comedy genre with roles in the teen comedy Orange County and the Jason Lee/Tom Green Crime Comedy Stealing Harvard.
