A dated flick (who wouldn't cheerfully cut out the 11 minute acid trip sequence) but one that changed the studio system, and indeed, the independent film scene, so give it the kudos it deserves.
Besides, Nicholsons performance is worth enduring some of the 60s trippiness (that would soon be abandoned by the same practitioners in the 80's.)
