Director: Kathryn Bigelow Starring: Elizabeth Hurley, Sean Penn, Sarah Polley, Catherine McCormack, Vinessa Shaw, Josh Lucas Synopsis: Well, this flick actually showed at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2000 but wasn't released until 2002...odd.
Based on Anita Shreve's novel.
A newspaper photographer, Jean (McCormack), researches the lurid and sensational axe murder of two women in 1873 as an editorial tie-in with a brutal modern double murder. She discovers a cache of papers that appear to give an account of the murders by an eyewitness.
The book, and in turn, the movie is based on an actual double-murder on the Isles of Shoals on March 6, 1873.
