Starring: Christina Applegate, Candice Bergen, Rob Lowe, Kelly Preston, Stephen Tobolowsky, Jon Polito, Mike Myers, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Ruffalo, Marc Blucas Synopsis: A comedy about a young woman (Paltrow) from meager beginnings who has high hopes for the future. Donna dreams of becoming a first class international flight attendant and is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that her dreams come true. The road to success, though, is rarely a smooth flight, and as she begins her trip she encounters more turbulence than even she bargained for. But the real question is whether her bumpy start will cause her to leave her dreams behind or if it will take her on a journey of a lifetime.
The buzz was that Mike Myers has a really funny improv that was left on the editing room floor. It was shot before September 11 but in light of the events, perhaps it didn't seem so funny. Who knows? Could be mere Hollywood myth or it could be a future bonus feature on the DVD.

As I sat in my ever-so-comfortable theatre chair to wait for Dreamcatcher to start I heard a guy behind me complaining about this flick. It was a stupid movie just because of the concept of a girl trapped in a small town trying to get out of her pre-destined existence by becoming a stewardess.
He is right, if this were to be taken seriously, then yes, it would be a rather...maybe not stupid but certainly uninspired storyline. However, this is a comedy...and this simple girl picks a simple way out to find a new life for herself. These are the jokes folks and if you can't see that, then there simply is no way you will enjoy A View From The Top.
I'm not defending this film as a great comedy, or even as a consistent one, but it does have its moments. A cameo from Rob Lowe has some laughs, Gwyneth Paltrow's first day (and first flight ever) had me laughing as she panics and screams in the middle of the airplane aisle, freakking the passengers out...I laughed. I laughed at SOME of the antics of Mike Myers and then shook my head as he shamelessly ripped off himself from Wayne's World 2 and the Austin Powers films with his whacky John Whitney role.
The film was shelved for two years and had a scene with Myers performing a 'what-to-do' in case of a hi-jack attempt on a plane cut from the film (you can see a segment of it in the end credits with Myers sporting a machine gun around his waist). The film has some turbulent comedy moments where nothing remotely funny happens on screen for five to ten minutes, but there are sequences that had me chuckle if not laugh outright, which is more than I can say about Bringing Down the House which has been number one now for three weeks in a row at the box-office. The audience mind-set boggles me.
So what I am generally saying, a few laughs, some great hair and costumes for Paltrow, a funny catfight between Paltrow and Applegate (with a well-placed loaf of bread saving Paltrow's face) has me handing out the rather even handed score of 2 out of 5. Nothing brilliant by any stretch of the imagination but catch a matinee and cheerfully waste your afternoon away.
