Review: This was the film that closed out the Toronto film festival this year and it did not disappoint. Cabin Fever, even though it came close to not being made several times, has got a lot of things going for it.
The director, Eli Roth, is an obvious student of the horror genre. The references to Raimi and Romero are affectionately evident, lending to his intent to make a horror film that is a throwback to the classics of the seventies and eighties.
The tongue-in-cheek style mixes wonderfully with the gore, once again provided by KNB EFX Group, who I never tire of. The cast, which includes Jordan Ladd, Rider Strong and James DeBello, work together well with dialogue that is genuinely funny and not just secondary.
Using selections from David Hess’ music from the infamous Last House On The Left, the music is also a reference to the past. In addition, Roth’s connections to David Lynch, whom he worked with earlier in his career, enabled him to snag master composer Angelo Badalamenti to write the score for the film.
Roth, appreciative of the receptive crowd, told the story of the seven-year journey to get Cabin Fever made. The production chugged along, surviving a few shutdowns, the worst of which came during the North Carolina Anthrax scares in the fall of 2001. Other amusing details were Matthew Helms, who plays Dennis, the hand-biting little kid is actually a black belt in karate and one of the other ‘townies’ was released from a mental institution just days before he was cast in his part.
This is an enthusiastic horror film that I predict is going to be quite popular with genre fans. And now that Lion’s Gate Pictures has won the bidding war, it looks like this movie will see the light of day. My advice is to check it out and get ready to enjoy yourself.
