Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle

Director:
McG
Starring:
Drew Barrymore, Demi Moore, Bernie Mac, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, Shia LaBeouf

Synopsis: Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz all return to fight crime in this sequel to the smash comedy action flick Charlie's Angels. This time though Bernie Mac replaces Bill Murray (sigh...Bill Murray rules but apparently he couldn't deal with Lucy Liu). This time out they will be fighting Demi Moore who makes a big return to the silver screen here.

Hey, LOVED the first one, but loses a point for thinking Bernie Mac (who is great) is a replacement for Bill Murray. The teaser trailer was over-the-top excessive and hysterical. I'll buy your ticket. Excerpted from the DVDwolf Summer 2003 Guide.

Charlie's Angels - Full Throttle Review
Review: Ok...I really enjoyed the first one...but I have to say, by the time this one was over, I was done. It was just a video game, a barrage of incidents that lead from one explosion to another...and the explosions went downhill. The kick ass cartoon style opening that cheerfully rips off Raiders of the Lost Ark sets a great tone. A tone that the film just can't keep pace with. In fact, by the finale, there has been so many action scenes that the 'big' fight between the Angels and ex-Angel Madison is a let-down.

Here's the good about Charlie's Angels Full Throttle. 1) The fun, over-the-top opening. You've already seen most of it in the trailers but it's a blast and totally tongue-in-cheek.

2) The soundtrack. Lots of loud, classic tunes with some new ones to keep current. A real pop-the-disk in your cd player and try not to get caught in a speed trap kind of soundtrack.

3) Drew Barrymore. She really seems to enjoy being in this film, and despite all of Lucy Liu's training and background, Barrymore looks tough when she is in a fight, she looks like she is real holding her own, while the other two Angels look like choreography is their best friend.

4) A off-kilter romantic sequence between Barrymore and creepy thin man (Glover) that is priceless.

5) The steady stream of spot the movie references from Singin' In The Rain, Mission Impossible 2, Grease and even Starsky & Hutch.

The mediocre. I'll put it simply, Bernie Mac is no Bill Murray. That is not a slam against Bernie Mac, a very funny man...but he is no Bill Murray.

The Bad. The major factor of 'badness' comes from the fact that there is never any real moment where I find myself caring about any of the characters or the events. Like a video game or a cartoon, one never really becomes invested in the characters and gives a damn whether they live or die.

Of course, the movie isn't about story, or even character, it's about being a loud, brash, in your face action sequel...and for that part it does it's job and lands a 3 out of 5 stars.
