Shaolin Soccer Review

Every once in awhile I get a chance to see something unique...new...exhilirating and brilliant. Recently I sat down with some friends and took in a film called Shaolin Soccer. If you haven't heard of it yet, don't worry...you will. This film is a comedy, a western, a parody of Hollywood and Bollywood...a Rocky style soccer flick with martial arts...in fact, it has a little bit of something for everyone and I just want to get as many people I can seeing this film.

It is amazing how cliched this film really is. Seriously. It has every cliche moment possible in a sporting film, gathering of the team, the misfits, the practice game, the tournament...and yet, it is all sparkling, demented, fascinating and one of the best films I have seen in years. It is, simply and honestly, a giddy joy for those open to it.

Director/Actor Stephen Chow, who has appeared in over 50 movies and is often called the Jim Carrey of the East is no stranger to success...the man has 5 of the top ten highest grossing flicks in Hong Kong (Shaolin Soccer is #1 by the way). We in the west may be a tad slow in catching up with this cinematic genius...but that seems about to change. And if Shaolin catches on, expect a deluge of flicks from Hong Kong hitting our cinemas, the likes we haven't seen since the box-office smash of Rumble in the Bronx with Jackie Chan.
