Disney had some success converting a ride into a movie with The Country Bears last summer...and now they have two this year (Haunted Mansion hits in the Fall). I wrote the whole idea off...until I saw the cast (Johnny Depp, Jonathan Pryce, Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom) and the amazing trailer. This could be one great little summer flick with great effects and not aimed directly for the kiddies! Excerpted from the DVDwolf Summer 2003 Guide.

Pirates of the Caribbean Review

Review: Well, I am going to have to agree with myself. That little blurb above that goes on to say this could be one great little summer flick is bang-on. This is a unique addition to the big blockbuster flicks hitting the screens this summer. It has everything, explosions, choreographed swordfights, pirates that turn into skeletons in the moonlight, and Johnny Depp doing what he does best, acting and never quite the way you expect him to.
I watched Depp in an interview recently and his theory was that Pirates were the Rock Stars of their time, and he figures that Keith Richards is the biggest living Pirate, and in turn based his eclectic and wild performance of Captain Jack Sparrow on the death-defiant Richards. A stunning choice and one I can not imagine any other actor making. And when Captain Jack walks the plank or the footlights you best be paying attention because it is one of the most interesting sights you will see all summer. I also think that whomever came up with the concept behind Sparrow's major entrance for the script deserves a raise, it may be one of the most memorable on screen introductions to a character since Silence of the Lambs.
That's not to give short shrift to Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightley, but they just don't get the insane lines and behaviour to toy with that Depp does.
Although the movie runs long, and some battle scenes seem almost pointless (after all, if you are fighting pirates that won't die, the best choice is simply not to fight them) the real truth is, this film is a lot more fun than others that have come along in a while. Another mildly negative point, Captain Jack is captured and escapes so many times from both evil pirates and not so nice British Soldiers one wonders how much tighter the film would have been without these noisy and unnecessary asides.
Still, despite the running time, this is still, like its origins, an entertaining ride and one that can be recommended to both young and old, as long as your young don't mind the pirates transforming into skeletons. It is the first PG Disney film for a reason...so take heed before you rush your four year old into a booster seat. Sinbad might be a better choice of pirate films in this case.
And as always at this point I denigrate months and years of work into a number...and that number is more than fair 4 out of 5, sheer summer fun that puts bloated box-office flicks like The Matrix: Reloaded and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle to shame.
