Soderbergh Cuts Deals For Ocean's 12

Digging around today on the websites I found some shtuff of Steven Soderbergh's plans for the sequel to Ocean's 11. I have to admit, while I don't always like his movies, he has some interesting things to say about the state of the industry.

"When we were coming back from doing press in December 2001, I asked everybody if the idea of a sequel appealed and they were cool. But they had to make a promise: that is, we're gonna be the first sequel in history that costs exactly the same as the first one. And since the scale of the sequel's gonna be even bigger, they're all gonna have to take an even bigger pay cut than last time."

Ocean's Twelve Review
The positives here for an audience are many.

The entire cast is back and ready to play. That alone is a solid note.

Add in Vincent Cassel as a jealous super thief and Catherine Zeta Jones as a love interest of Rusty (Brad Pitt) who just happens to be a cop who wants to bring him in.

And then there is the first hour and a half. Solid, solid stuff. Juggling 12 characters, giving them all a reasonable amount of screen time and somepersonality is no small feat. Having them jump back into the heist game to pay back their old enemy Benedict (Garcia) is just a launching point to a series of events that happen quickly and while not too twisty are enough to keep us interested.

Matt Damon gets some of the more fun moments for the first bit until Julia Roberts as Tess as Julia Roberts comes along and steals the film with a helluva great tie-in cameo. Again, clever. A cameo upped by a cameo in a way.

I was enjoying this film and then something happened. It went away. It went away in the last fifteen minutes, the most crucial part of my happiness. You got me to this point, you kept me through some of the more ludicrous moments because I wanted to go along with you and then...then you pulled the most vicious heist of all. You screwed me out of my final, twisty, shocking ending and left me with a flat lining ending that hurts.

Steven Soderbergh knows what he is doing, the man has a lot of talent and tricks in him and yet, for some reason he and screenwriter George Nolfi decided that the final hesit doesn't matter. Sure there will be some dumbasses who are content for a comraderie flick but when I go to a heist film...I want the set-up, I want the twists and turns and ups and downs, the cleverness inherent within...but most of all I want a really cool big heist sequence. And wow, did they fail on this level. No dancing man amongst random lasers is going to sway me from that opinion.

Final tally. 4 stars for the first hour and a half but losing a star for the ending. 3 Stars out of 5.
