Starring:
Sally Field, Bob Newhart, Reese Witherspoon, Regina King, Luke Wilson, Jennifer Coolidge, James Urbaniak

Synopsis: Follow up to the massively successful Legally Blonde.
So how do you follow up the first one? Well, take Ellie out of her element once more and give her a new mentor of sorts. Elle Woods is all about animal rights. In fact, she puts her nuptial plans on hold to head to Washington D.C. to get an anti-animal testing bill passed. Her building's doorman (a great casting move with Bob Newhart) quickly shows her the ways and workings of our nation's capital.

The first one was cute, but a quick viewing of this trailer makes it scream out same script, different location. Excerpted from the DVDwolf Summer 2003 Guide.

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde Review
Review: Well I have to say for the most part, I was right on the mark here. Despite all the 'growth' of Elle's character from the first one when we rejoin her she is soon led into fish out of water territory so that she can redecorate the new pond.

Which, in the scheme of things is fine. The first film was a bit of a surprise hit so I won't be shocked too much when this film pulls in a pretty solid box-office take. While Elle Woods moves onto new challenges, the elements that made the first film a hit are all here so as to keep the audience happy.

Having given Legally Blonde 2 all these nice, backhanded compliments I can say this, the film has momentum and actually gets better as it goes on. Basically a hybrid between the original Legally Blonde and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (at least it is acknowledged with a film clip of Jimmy Stewart classic) the film never strives for anything more than fun with a not-so-subtle message that if you love your pets you should be against animal testing. Hey, I agree, I am all against animal testing, just don't expect me to stop eating hamburgers.

I really feel it would be foolish to go on and on whether or not Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde is a good film. Suffice to say, if you loathed the first, this one won't change your mind and if you loved, well, it's more of the same. Let's put it this way, where Stewart's speech is a passionate classic, a film that hits the heart and swells the mind with ideas when it comes time for Elle's speech it is merely a case of cute and while its heart is in the right place, it never captures anything more than a Barbie vision of reality. But really, were you expecting anything else?

The one thing I really do question is this holding up Elle Woods as an example of high minded female power...the meshing of beauty culture and brains. She is so busy making the pop-culture comparisons ("This is just like C-Span, except it's not boring.") that one really wonders what the results of such an 'empowering film' as this might be on this generation of teens.

So, I'm stuck in the middle of the road on this one with a 2.5 stars out of 5.
