I can't always explain why a solid film with a good cast, an above average script and some unique cinematography doesn't quite make the box-office light up (to be fair it pulled in just over $38 million domestically). Filmmakers are lucky today to have the realm of DVD and VHS to allow the slow discovery of something worthwhile.
Matchstick Men is a worthwhile film. It isn't the greatest movie last year, it wasn't denied or shut out of any deserving award shows...but it surely wasn't given the audience it should be assured considering how many people will flock out to see Jackass The Movie.
Was it the concept of having to watch Nicholas Cage nervous twitch his way through OCD-like compulsions? Was it the possibility of a father-daughter sweet film despite the con-artist plot running through it? I am sure it wasn't the fear of seeing it as a remake of Paper Moon for as much as I love that movie, I know a large percentage of the population have yet to sit down and watch that classic. In fact, there's a good double bill for next weekend, go get both and watch them!
Unfortunately, this is one of those movies you will have to take my word on...if I go too far into the storyline I could turn around and accidentally let slip a detail or two that gives an inklling of where this tale may end up. I will just let you know...if there are con-artists in the film, you know that the filmmakers will at least TRY to pull the rug out from under you once or twice ...sometimes the con works, sometimes it is obviously painful that it isn't...Matchstick Men, even when the twists seem obvious, have good performers, excellent dialogue and some clever editing tricks to keep you engrossed in the film.
A very fair 4 stars out of 5.
