Like Groucho Marx used to say 'They can't all be gems'.
Right?
Right.
After all, Nicole Kidman made My Life.
Matthew Broderick was in Inspector Gadget.
Bette Midler was in Outrageous Fortune.
Glen Close was in Mary Reilly.
Christopher Walken was in Gigli, Kangaroo Jack and The Country Bears in the last year and a half).
And I simply don't have the time to launch into Jon Lovitz's list.
The thing is, these people, these talented, well paid actors have just been assembled as a Hollywood ensemble to create the worst outing for all involved. (Well, maybe not Jon Lovitz...he has some real dogs behind him (Mom and Dad Save the World anyone?).
How does this happen? Solid concept based on a novel that should be more comedic than anything by today's standards and yet it makes for a dull, lifeless outing with sparse laughs and uneven tones.
I hate to blame Frank Oz as a director but I don't know where else to turn. Wait...no, that's wrong...I do know who to blame. The freakin' screenwriter for creating a toneless, mediocre script from which nothing but mediocrity can grow. So Paul Rudnick, you of Marci X fame, you are officially placed on the warning list or nearly extinct comedy writers.
1 star out of 5.
