Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! Review

Review: I'm not betting I am the first to say this, and I am not proud of the words about to spill forth, but this is probably the first date movie of 2004. A romantic comedy that almost seems like two separate films at times. At some point it is a pretty cute, funny little flick with Topher Grace doing his best Chandler Bing (who am I kidding, it's basically his Eric Forman character from That 70's Show) and at other times it is a mildly charming and sometime annoying romance film between Tad Hamilton (Duhamel) and Rosalee Futch (Bosworth).

Bosworth for her part really excels as a naive but endearing small town girl who get blown away by her dreamdate, but it goes to the point of absurdity. For example, a woman who has seen all of Tad Hamilton's movie has no idea that she should 'clink' wine glasses with her date. While the film does actually treat the Tad Hamilton character as a human the filmmakers almost drop the ball on Rosalee and make her an ignorant smalltown girl. If it wasn't for Rosalee's smile and excitement for the circumstances around her I'm sure I would have had a harder time getting through the flick than I did.

To tell the truth, I was enjoying the film more when they concentrated on the comedic sides of the story than the straight ahead romantic redemption of Hamilton and his smalltown conquest. Topher Grace gets some solid laughs as he tries to one-up the perfect Tad Hamilton and some solid laughs come out of Sean Hayes and Nathan Lane as the two Richard Levy's (one is an agent, the other a manager). Also worth noting is the up and coming Ginnifer Goodwin who who has your typical best friend role but does what she can with a couple of sharp looks and the one or two one-liners that she gets to spew.

It's basically what you can expect from the director of Legally Blonde, a cute enough one-premise romantic comedy but let's hope the year of 2004 brings less formulaic efforts soon.

2.5 out of 5.
